Where Should I Take My Trash?
Where should I take my trash? For rural residents, this isn't as easy as wheeling your bin to the curb on collection day. Separating and sorting your garbage and recyclables can be an onerous and time consuming task, never mind the additional time it takes to drive them to a facility to dispose of.
At Saddle Hills County, we do our best to make your disposal and recycling needs as easy and seamless as possible. We operate a number of Garbage Collection Sites throughout the County, as well as Transfer Stations in Blueberry, Bonanza, Gundy, and Woking. Through an agreement with the County of Grande Prairie, the Clairmont Landfill is also made available to residents whose needs cannot be met by the previously mentioned options.
We appreciate the hard work put in by our community to keep our beautiful backyard clean and our waste disposal sites operational and safe for our dedicated team who work hard to deal with our unwanted items.
If you have a concern about waste in the County and are struggling to dispose of something or unsure where to take an item, please Contact Us. We would be more than happy to help!
What Can I Dispose of at Collection Sites?
Garbage Collection sites are intended for the disposal of general solid household waste and recyclable items and are open 24/7.
Recyclables accepted include Mixed Paper and Cardboard, Plastic, and Tin and Metal Cans. All recycling should be cleaned of residue and empty prior to putting it into the recycling bins.
Mixed Paper and Cardboard:
- Newspapers
- Magazines
- Flyers
- Phone Books
- Writing Paper
- Envelopes
- Disposable Paper Coffee Cups
Plastic (marked #1 to #7 only):
- Plastic Bottles
- Plastic Food Containers
- Plastic Jugs and Containers
Tin and Metal Cans:
- Metal Cans
- Aluminum Foil
- Aluminum Containers
- Beverage Cans
What Can't Be Disposed of at Collection Sites?
We ask that County residents please do not leave their waste outside of full or overflowing bins. By dumping waste outside of the bins, the community and staff are put in unsafe situations as they are unaware of the contents of bags or items disposed of. They are also required to spend additional time, and taxpayer dollars, correctly disposing of these items, which could be better spent operating facilities and serving the community.
Items that cannot be recycled at collection sites include:
- Styrofoam
- Glass
- Grocery Bags
- Saran Wrap
- Oil Jugs
- Barbed Wire
- Other Metals not listed.
For the safety of all, please do not dispose of dead animals in the collection bins. The Government of Alberta provides a variety of ways to deal with the disposal of carcasses and dead animals (including pets), through Livestock Mortality Management.
Hazardous materials are also not permitted at collection sites for safety reasons. Some hazardous waste items are accepted at our Transfer Stations or the Clairmont Landfill. If you are curious if an item you would like to dispose of is accepted, please visit the Transfer Stations during regular operating hours and speak to an attendant or call our Environmental Service Department at (780) 864-3760.
Burn barrel residue is accepted at collection sites, but we do ask that this is bagged and that it has been checked to ensure it is cooled. Please do not dispose of hot ashes in the bins as these can cause fires. This is especially important for our upcoming wildfire season and the current dry conditions we have been experiencing.
Anything not accepted at Collection Sites can be taken to the Transfer Stations or Clairmont Landfill during regular operating hours.
Thank you for taking the time to dispose of your garbage in the correct manor. We appreciate the hard work of our community in ensuring we can provide the best service possible to our residents!
