Students Learn About Local Government During Leaders of Tomorrow Event

Savanna School

Grade five and six students from several local schools visited the Saddle Hills County complex on Thursday, September 29, to participate in Leaders of Tomorrow, an event sponsored by the County and designed to help them learn more about how local government works.

Participating schools included Savanna School, Spirit River Regional Academy, Ste. Marie Catholic School and Rycroft School. There were 83 students in all who attended two separate sessions, each of which included a mock council meeting, and a tour of the facility.

The tour also featured demonstrations of county vehicles from the Operations and Protective Services departments and discussions with Saddle Hills County Peace Officer Norm Backer and Protective Services Manager Brice Daly.

In preparation for the meetings the students prepared agenda items and chose councillors to represent their school and the chosen councillors were guided through the mock council meetings with the help of Reeve Alvin Hubert, Deputy Reeve, Danny Roy and Councillor Kristen Smith.
