Saving Money and Improving Recycling in Alberta

As of April 1, Alberta has introduced new Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs to begin reducing waste, improving recycling programs, and ultimately saving communities and taxpayers money. The provincewide shift to EPR aims to keep thousands of kilograms of waste out of Alberta landfills.

EPR shifts the financial burden of recycling single-use products away from municipalities and onto the companies that produce the packaging and products. By moving the responsibility to producers, EPR encourages them to find new ways to reduce waste and design products that are more recyclable and reusable. Programs include thousands of different single-use products, packaging and paper, along with
hazardous and special products, like batteries and pesticides.

Saddle Hills County, along with most other Alberta municipalities and all major cities, will operate under the new EPR programs. By streamlining and standardizing recycling throughout Alberta, it is hoped that costs will be reduced.
