Don't Let it Loose! Invasive Species Action Week

Keep pets safe: The majority of invasive vertebrate species have been introduced through the exotic pet and aquarium trade (British Ecological Society, 2017).

Releasing a domestic pet into the wild can not only be harmful to the environment but also the animal itself, and is even considered an act of animal cruelty in some provinces. Pets like the red-eared slider turtle, goldfish and domestic rabbits, although seemingly harmless, can disrupt native ecosystems, spread disease and outcompete native species for resources if they escape or are released into the wild. Be a responsible pet owner, never release pets into the wild!
