Alberta Releases Updated Drought Response Plan

Alberta has released a new, updated Drought Response Plan aimed at helping Albertans better understand and respond to drought conditions in their communities.

In May of this year, the Government of Alberta released the 2024 Drought Response Plan, which placed the entire province in Stage 4, the second highest of the outlined stages. Since then, conditions have varied across the province, with some areas seeing significant rainfall, while others continue to experience droughts and water shortages. In response to this, Alberta felt a more targeted approach was needed.

The updated Drought Response Plan classifies drought stages by river basin and better reflects the conditions of each region. It assigns each region a ranking from Stage 0 to Stage 4, with no basins reported at Stage 5, at this time. Moving forward, drought classifications will be updated as needed, based on the weather conditions, water supply, and demand.

Albertans can now see drought stages and check conditions in their area using the new online map.
