AFSC Extending Recommended Seeding Dates For 2022 Crop Year
From AFSC
A cool, wet spring has created seeding delays in many areas of northern Alberta. It is estimated that producers in the area are collectively over 1.2 million acres behind normal progress. As a result, for the 2022 crop year only, AFSC is extending the recommended seeding dates for several crops in the North East, North West and Peace regions.
“Alberta producers are resilient and have the ability to plant the crop quickly, if the weather cooperates,” said Jesse Cole, manager of Insurance Products and Product Innovation at Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC). “However, it is important to help alleviate the pressure that producers are feeling without adding undue risk to the insurance program.
“To this end, AFSC is extending the recommended seeding date for a number of crops by five to 15 days, depending on the crop.”
Under annual crop insurance, certain crops have specified recommended seeding dates while others have seeding deadlines. No changes are being made to AFSC seeding deadlines.
For the 2022 crop year only, AFSC is extending the recommended seeding dates in the North East, North West and Peace regions as described in the table below:
Analysis of the impact of recommended seeding date extensions suggests that recommended seeding dates for these crops could be extended with marginal increases in the risk of additional losses.
Clients who seed these crops within the extended recommended seeding dates will be covered for quality (grade) loss. Clients who seed these crops after the extended recommended seeding dates may not be covered for quality (grade loss) if the cause of loss does not appear to be general to the area.
No changes are being made to the dates for crops with seeding deadlines.
The Land Report filing deadline of June 20 remains unchanged.
